Sure, new seamless siding or roofing is exciting—but for some owners that excitement pales in comparison to that of getting a new deck. Summer nights grilling, mosquito-free outdoor space, and your own personal retreat all await you!
But before you go max-budget on that outdoor set you’ve always dreamed of, it might be helpful to understand a little bit about what the deck-building process looks like. While we at Tony’s Lifetime Exteriors work hard as deck builders to keep deck installation stress-and-hands free for our clients, it’s understandably a little disconcerting to not know the next step in the building process, or when or how your deck builders intend to finish the job!
Thus, we’re here to educate—just like we will be throughout the entire process. Below, you’ll find a brief guide to the deck building process, from what to expect before the work begins to after your deck installation team wraps up work.
Preliminary Work
Of course, your contractor won’t just show up after you call them with their tools and crew at the ready; building a deck takes time and effort! Specifically, it takes time and effort on the contractor’s part to understand what you’re hoping to get out of your new structure, as well as determine if that idea is feasible, given your current home’s features.
So what does that mean? Well, for starters, your contractor will want to know a few obvious things: where you want the deck to have access to the house and the yard, for example, and what material you’d like it to be made out of. They’ll also want to know the restrictions for their build—if things like sewer lines, septic tanks, or the like will change the way the build looks.
You’ll also have a frank chat with them about the budget. Neither you nor your contractor wants to build a project you won’t be able to afford, so don’t be afraid to be honest; in fact, it’s encouraged.
Pulling Permits
Before they can modify your home, any good contractor will do what’s called “pulling permits.” This means they will get the appropriate documents from the government stating that their proposed plan is legitimate and follows building codes.
Why can’t I build whatever I want on my property? You may wonder. I own it, after all! Well, yes, you may own it, but codes exist for a reason, and that reason is not only your safety, but the safety of anyone else who happens to use the deck. Pulling the proper permits ensures that your deck’s design is safe and secure. Above that, you may be ordered by officials to have it removed if you don’t have the proper paperwork filed, so it’s always best to give your contractor the time they need to do this!
The timelines will vary with localities; a seasoned deck installer will be able to give you a solid estimate.
Getting to Work
When your contractor gets the go-ahead from the officials, they’ll officially begin work—and it’s time for you to sit back and relax! Provided no questions need answering, your deck builder should now have everything they need to create the deck of your dreams.
Every deck build will have an individual process, so how your contractor will go about it depends on the exactitudes of the plan. Generally, though, you can expect your deck to progress from its foundation or frame to posts, vinyl or aluminum deck railing, and stairs.
Can I Do Anything to Help?
While your contractor will do all of the heavy-lifting, there are certainly ways you can prepare for their arrival so as to make their jobs all the easier.
For one, clearing the area of childrens’ toys, backyard furniture, and other such fixtures makes it so your contractor can roll right up and get to work. You may also try to make as much parking room as possible, though most contractors will try to make due with what they have. During the workday, keep track of small kids and pets and don’t allow them near the worksite. Finally, providing access to power outlets is always greatly appreciated; electric tools are often an important part of the process.
After the Final Nail
Your deck is finished—and you can’t wait to begin to decorate! At this stage, though, your contractor shouldn’t just wash their hands of you and be done; they, in fact, still have important work to do.
They should show you the end results of their labor and walk through its features with you, answering any questions you may have. When they leave the property, they should also provide you with a number to call should issues arise.
